About Me

My name is Jim Gratiot—professional ghostwriter, author, and editor. I live near Sacramento with my wife, 5 kids, and a shaggy labradoodle that barks way too much.

I have wanted to be a writer since I was 12 years old—and in the ensuing 41 years, the writing I’ve done has been much more widespread than I ever imagined it would be.

Since that magical day in 1994 when I published my first newspaper article (Generation X: A Term Used for Trashing), I have written, both under my name and for others:

  • A screenplay for Lifetime Television (and three more contracted for next year)
  • Three full-length thrillers
  • Half a dozen full-length memoirs
  • A biography of a former Major League Baseball player
  • Dozens of newspaper and magazine articles
  • Two well-received young adult novels
  • A five-book children’s series for an ex-Harlem Globetrotter basketball player
  • A popular photography marketing book
  • A photography newsletter that was read in over 50 countries
  • A guide to throwing a successful garage sale
  • A business book, 9 Common Mistakes That Most Small Business Owners Make
  • Dozens of trivia books

This isn’t a comprehensive list by any means, but it should give you a sense of how diverse my talents and tastes are.

I have a unique educational background—a B.A. Degree in Creative Writing and a Master’s Degree in Accounting. This gives me a particular advantage when writing business memoirs—it means that unless your story is completely esoteric, I’ll be fully able to grasp what it’s about.

I am also a voracious reader, which is a must for being a good writer. Although I prefer fiction, I’m also a sucker for sales & marketing books, as well as memoirs and autobiographies. But I really don’t limit myself at all—if a topic is interesting, I’ll happily read a book about it.

Finally, I worked for 12 years as a professional editor for a Fortune 500 financial company. This developed in me a laser-focused eye for all that yucky stuff like grammar, punctuation, spelling, and all the rest.

The full-time ghostwriting part of my career began when I received an email from the ex-Harlem Globetrotter player, who had read and enjoyed my first young adult novel. We chatted over lunch, and he hired me to write five children’s books for a global literacy program he was launching.

I was hooked, and immediately realized that writing other people’s stories is even more fulfilling than writing my own material—because while I still get to spend my days writing (my main passion), I also get to help other people realize their creative dreams.

If you’d like me to help you realize your creative dream, please call or email me today! You’ll be glad you did.
